This list of numerous fitness trackers and sports watches along with their ratings should allow for finding the product that suits your requirements best.

How does the rating works?

To rate a fitness tracker or sports watch isn’t always easy as their boundaries blur and some fitness trackers are referred to as sports watches while some fitness trackers could compete with sports watches. Though comparing e.g. a Garmin fenix 7 with a Fitbit Inspire HR is possible, it does not make sense at all. Therefore I try to assign a product to one of the following categories:

  • Fitness Trackers
  • Sports watches
  • Smartwatches

Depending on the category, the rating depends on different weighted aspects embracing the list of features, the display and usability and the battery life:

  • Fitness Trackers
    • Features: 45%
    • Display / Usability: 20%
    • Battery life: 30%
  • Sports watches
    • Features: 50%
    • Display / Usability: 25%
    • Battery life: 25%
  • Smartwatches
    • Features: 60%
    • Display / Usability: 20%
    • Battery life: 20%

The maximal score for each aspect is 100. As they are weighted differently, they contribute in different manner to the total score.

Note: After some consideration I have removed the aspect of cost/performance ratio that has once been weighted with 20 percent. Though being perfect legitimate, the ever-changing street prices make a scoring obsolete the seconds you post it. The percents have been spread to the remaining aspects.

List of Features

The rating of features depends on the product category, which means that for example specific running features (e.g. cadence, vertical oscillation) are not weighted or weighted low for a fitness tracker but are weighted high for a sports watch. However the rating for sports watches is less affected by a great battery life, as it is for fitness trackers.

Smartwatches are focus on the display and usability. Dedicated sports features often take a back seat.

Display & Usability

As all things interrelate, especially the display and the usability I rate the the display’s quality, the readability of depicted information and the usability in general alltogether in this aspect. Did I mention that all everything is linked to anything? This means that I take the list of features into consideration as well, as a display might be perfect the way it displays information, but the access to all the functions is cruelsome.

Battery Life

This aspect focuses on the battery life and takes into account that a feature rich product might have a shorter battery life than a product with a basic set of functions, resulting in a higher rating than for a product with less functions but the same battery life.

Do ratings change over time?

Yes, they do. The market of fitness trackers and sports watches is evolving at a fast pace. Sometimes products are improved by firmware updates. Sometimes it is the announcement of a new product / feature that I considered relevant and thus added it to the rating. While the first usually results in a better rating, the later usually devalues existing ratings. And sometimes it is just me, changing my mind.

Is a product with a higher rating better than a product with a lower rating?

Concerning the comparison of features, usability and battery life it is. But this is a rather objective way of judging a product. Though a Garmin fenix 5 Plus has a pretty high rating, it isn’t necessarily the better product for someone who wants to get step counting and sleep tracking. Though this works perfectly fine with the Fenix 5 Plus, a less complex fitness tracker might be better. I guess you got the point.
